A client sent us three screenshots last month. She’d asked ChatGPT for the best providers in her category, a competitor was named. She’d Googled the same question and the AI Overview quoted a directory listing she’d never heard of. Then she’d tried Perplexity, which cited a two-year-old blog post from a third competitor. Her question was the obvious one: “Which of these is the real one?”
All three are real. Together they now field a meaningful share of the questions your customers used to type into a single search box, and each one assembles its answer from a different machine. The good news is that the work you do to show up in one mostly helps with the others. The less good news is that “mostly” hides a few differences that decide where a small business should spend its first hours.

ChatGPT Search pulls answers from Bing’s index plus OpenAI’s own crawlers, Google AI Overviews draw on Google’s existing index and lean on classic ranking signals, and Perplexity runs its own index with real-time retrieval and dense citations. One well-structured, crawlable site feeds all three — but prioritization differs: local businesses should fix Google first, while B2B and national brands often win earlier citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity, where third-party mentions carry more weight than domain authority.
The three machines that answer your customers’ questions
Before you optimize for any of them, it helps to see that they are not three versions of the same thing. They are three different retrieval systems that happen to wear a chat interface.
ChatGPT Search runs primarily on Bing’s index, supplemented by OpenAI’s own crawlers. Three bots matter: OAI-SearchBot builds the index ChatGPT Search reads from, ChatGPT-User fetches pages live during a conversation, and GPTBot collects training data. OpenAI confirmed 800 million weekly users at its October 2025 DevDay and put the figure above 900 million by early 2026 — which is why this surface can no longer be treated as a sideshow.
Google AI Overviews sit on top of the index Google has built over 25 years, generated by Gemini. Google said in 2025 that AI Overviews reaches more than 1.5 billion users a month. Because it inherits Google’s existing ranking machinery, the signals that got you onto page one authority, local data, structured content still do most of the work here. Studies through 2025 consistently found a large overlap between pages cited in AI Overviews and pages already ranking organically, which is a polite way of saying: if your classic SEO is broken, your AI Overview presence is too.
Perplexity runs its own index with real-time retrieval and shows dense source citations on every answer. It crossed 100 million queries a week during 2025, per company statements smaller than the other two, but its users skew toward exactly the research-heavy, comparison-shopping queries that precede a purchase.
One table to keep them straight
| Surface | Where answers come from | Key crawler / index | What wins citations | Who’s asking | Your first move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | Bing’s index + OpenAI crawlers | OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User | Third-party mentions, clear extractable answers | 900M+ weekly users | Verify Bing Webmaster Tools, unblock OAI-SearchBot |
| Google AI Overviews | Google’s index + Gemini | Googlebot, Google-Extended | Strong classic rankings, local/Maps data, structured content | 1.5B+ monthly users | Fix fundamentals: rankings, Business Profile, schema |
| Perplexity | Own index, real-time retrieval | PerplexityBot | Fresh, well-structured pages; heavy citation of sources | 100M+ weekly queries | Publish citable, current content; allow PerplexityBot |
Where the three agree (do this once, benefit three times)
Here is the part that should reassure any busy owner: the core of the work is shared. All three systems need to be able to reach your pages, read them without executing JavaScript, and lift a clean answer out of them. The checklist we laid out in our GEO guide for SMEs crawlable HTML, answer-first structure, FAQ sections, real numbers, third-party mentions — feeds all three machines at once.
The Princeton GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found that adding relevant statistics lifted citation visibility by roughly 41%, and that lower-ranked pages benefited most from optimization. That finding was about AI answer engines generally, not one platform. Structure and substance travel well across all three.
Where they disagree (and what to do about it)
Three differences matter enough to change your priorities:
Index dependency. ChatGPT Search leans on Bing. If Bing hasn’t indexed you, ChatGPT largely can’t cite you no matter how healthy your Google traffic looks. Bing Webmaster Tools verification takes an afternoon and imports directly from Google Search Console. It is the single highest-leverage, lowest-effort move for ChatGPT visibility.
The role of classic rankings. AI Overviews correlate strongly with organic rankings; ChatGPT and Perplexity are far more willing to cite a page that ranks nowhere on Google, provided it answers the question cleanly and other sources vouch for it. Analyses of AI citations in 2026 found roughly 68% come from third-party sources rather than brand-owned sites — which is why a mention in a trade publication can beat your own homepage.
Freshness sensitivity. Perplexity retrieves in near real time and favors recent, well-maintained pages. ChatGPT Search sits somewhere in the middle. AI Overviews inherit Google’s slower, authority-weighted rhythms. A page you refresh monthly has an edge on Perplexity that it may never earn on Google.
Which surface should your business show up in first?
This is where we part ways with most advice on this topic, which treats “AI search” as one audience. It isn’t.
Local services — clinics, salons, restaurants, trades: start with Google. Local intent still runs through Google Maps and Business Profile, and AI answers to “near me” questions lean heavily on that same local data. Your first hour goes to your Business Profile, your reviews, and your local pages not to Bing Webmaster Tools.
B2B and national services: start with ChatGPT and Perplexity. Your buyers ask comparison questions (“best X for a 20-person company”), and those answers are assembled from third-party mentions and clearly structured explanations a game a smaller player can win without out-ranking incumbents on Google. The Princeton finding that underdogs gain the most from GEO applies here directly.
E-commerce: chase all three, but watch the shopping surfaces. AI assistants increasingly recommend products directly, which we covered in how AI shopping assistants pick stores. Product feeds, reviews and structured data matter more than blog content here.
What to do in your first month
Work in dependency order — there’s no point polishing answers on pages a crawler can’t reach:
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (import from Google Search Console) and confirm your key pages are indexed there.
- Open your
robots.txtand confirm OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended are not blocked. Our llms.txt playbook covers the adjacent housekeeping. - Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers.
- Take your five highest-value pages and move a direct, liftable answer to the top of each.
- Pick one third-party site your buyers actually read and earn a mention there this month.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the three as one channel. A business visible in AI Overviews can be invisible to ChatGPT simply because Bing never indexed it. Check each surface separately.
- Abandoning classic SEO for “GEO”. AI Overviews still lean on organic rankings, and ChatGPT cites only about 15% of the pages it retrieves — the fundamentals gate everything else.
- Blocking AI crawlers out of caution. Opting out of training (GPTBot) is a legitimate choice; blocking OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot quietly erases you from the answers.
- Measuring nothing. If you don’t know which surface cites you today, you can’t tell whether any of this worked. A simple monthly tracking routine — the subject of a companion piece we’ll publish soon — beats expensive dashboards.
Frequently asked questions
Question: Can the same content work for all three surfaces?
Answer: Mostly, yes. Crawlable HTML, answer-first structure, real numbers and third-party mentions help across ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity simultaneously. The differences are in emphasis: Bing indexing for ChatGPT, classic rankings for AI Overviews, and freshness for Perplexity.
Question: I rank well on Google. Am I already covered?
Answer: Partially. Strong rankings help with AI Overviews, but ChatGPT Search reads Bing’s index and OpenAI’s crawlers, not Google’s. Verify Bing indexing and check whether ChatGPT actually cites you for your key buyer questions before assuming coverage.
Question: Which surface has the most users?
Answer: Google AI Overviews by reach — Google reported more than 1.5 billion monthly users in 2025. ChatGPT follows with over 900 million weekly users as of early 2026, and Perplexity crossed 100 million weekly queries in 2025. Reach, however, matters less than which surface your specific buyers use.
Question: Do I need separate pages for each AI platform?
Answer: No. One well-structured page serves all three. What you may need per platform is distribution: Bing indexing, Google Business Profile completeness, and fresh content that Perplexity’s real-time retrieval picks up.
Question: How long until any of this shows results?
Answer: Once indexed and crawlable, live retrieval surfaces like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity can pick up improved pages within days to weeks. AI Overviews move at the speed of your organic rankings. Consistent third-party authority usually takes a few months of steady work.
The bottom line
ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity are three different machines wearing similar interfaces — one reads Bing, one reads Google, one reads the live web. The shared 80% of the work is a fast, crawlable site with extractable answers and real third-party proof. The deciding 20% is knowing which machine your customers actually ask. Local businesses should fix Google first; B2B and national players can win ChatGPT and Perplexity citations while competitors are still obsessing over blue links.
