AI Search in Japan 2026: Year in Review for SMEs

In August 2026, 52.3% of Japanese internet users said they now use generative AI to search. That is the first time the number has crossed half since CyberAgent’s GEO Lab started tracking it in May 2025, when it sat at 21.3%, according to CyberAgent’s August 2026 survey of 9,278 people covered by AdverTimes. AI search in Japan went from curiosity to habit in about fifteen months.

AI search in Japan crossed a tipping point in 2026. More than half of Japanese users now search with generative AI, Google AI Mode and LINE Yahoo’s Agent i became mainstream entry points, and Google began reporting AI visibility in Search Console. For SMEs, being cited inside AI answers now matters as much as ranking.

What Is AI Search, and Why Was 2026 the Tipping Point in Japan?

AI search is any search experience where a generative model writes the answer and cites sources, instead of only listing links. In Japan, that means Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and LINE Yahoo’s Agent i.

The reason 2026 matters is that usage finally reached the mainstream. Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) published its 2026 White Paper on Information and Communications on July 24, 2026, and it found that 58.8% of Japanese respondents had used generative AI services, up from 26.7% in the previous survey, as Impress Internet Watch reported. Japan still trails China (93.6%) and the United States (75.6%), but the gap is closing quickly.

Other research points the same way. NTT Docomo’s Mobile Society Research Institute found that generative AI usage among people aged 15 to 69 nearly doubled from 27% in February 2025 to 51% in February 2026, based on 7,223 respondents.

My view: this is the year Japanese search stopped being a single-channel game. Google is still the default, but it is no longer the only place where customers decide.

How Did AI Search in Japan Evolve in 2026? A Timeline

Here is what actually happened, month by month. I built this table because every “AI search trends” article I read this year listed US launches and ignored what reached Japanese users.

How did Google AI Mode change in Japan this year?

Google AI Mode became the most important AI search surface in Japan in 2026, largely because it lives inside the search box people already use.

Google expanded AI Mode to Japanese in September 2025, and 2026 was the year it filled out. According to Keywords Everywhere’s AI Mode tracker, AI Overviews started handing users off into AI Mode in January 2026, and Search Live expanded to every AI Mode country and language on March 26, 2026. Personal Intelligence, which connects apps like Gmail and Google Photos for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, began rolling out in Japan around May 8, 2026. And on August 27, 2026, Google added Google Flights integration and miles pricing to AI Mode, with both features reaching Japan (hotel booking stayed US-only).

The adoption data is striking. CyberAgent’s February 2026 survey found that 21.0% of Japanese users already used AI Mode, more than the 15.6% who used Gemini as a standalone app. Among teenagers, AI Mode usage hit 33.5%.

That tells you something important: Japanese users did not have to “switch” to AI search. Google moved AI search to them.

What is LINE Yahoo’s Agent i, and why should SMEs care?

Agent i is LINE Yahoo’s AI agent brand, launched on April 20, 2026, and it is the most underrated AI search development in Japan this year.

It merged the Yahoo! JAPAN AI Assistant and LINE AI into one product, accessible from LINE tabs and next to the Yahoo! JAPAN search box, and it draws on data from more than 100 LINE Yahoo services. By June it had expanded to 15 specialist domains and added image generation and personalization.

Here is the part SMEs should read twice. In its FY2025 results briefing on May 8, 2026, LINE Yahoo said it would roll out Agent i Biz and a “LINE OA AI Mode” for official accounts, introduce agent-style advertising during FY2026, and charge referral fees for AI-driven traffic to Yahoo! Shopping. The company reported revenue of ¥2.036 trillion for the year, so this is not a side project.

I believe this is the single biggest difference between AI search in Japan and AI search in the West. Millions of Japanese small businesses already run LINE Official Accounts. When the account itself becomes an AI surface, your LINE content stops being a newsletter and starts being training material for your own sales agent.

Where do ChatGPT and Gemini fit?

ChatGPT remains the most used standalone AI tool for search in Japan, but Gemini is growing faster.

CyberAgent’s February 2026 data put ChatGPT at 29.1% and Gemini at 15.6%, with Gemini up 5.2 points in a single survey period. The generational shift is even sharper. Back in September 2025, CyberAgent found that Japanese teenagers already used ChatGPT (42.9%) more than Yahoo! JAPAN (31.7%) for search. By August 2026, generative AI search usage among teens reached 80.6%, with 61.0% among people in their 20s and 50.2% among people in their 40s, according to AIsmiley’s summary of the latest CyberAgent survey.

On the commerce side, Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol and OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol set the rules for AI agents that complete purchases. McKinsey projects agentic commerce could reach US$3 trillion to US$5 trillion a year by 2030. Most of that is still early in Japan, but the pipes are being built now.

Do Japanese Users Actually Trust AI Answers?

Yes and no, and this contradiction is the most useful insight in this whole review.

On one side, Japanese users are ending searches at the AI answer. NTT Docomo’s research, published in February 2026, found that 64% of generative AI users sometimes, often or almost always stop at the AI summary without clicking a link. PRIZMA’s June 2026 survey of 1,034 people found that about 90% of users in every age group read AI summaries on the results page.

On the other side, Japan is the most skeptical market measured. Aun Consulting’s July 2026 five-country study found that 36.7% of Japanese respondents skip AI Overviews and go straight to organic results, the highest rate among Japan, the US, Germany, India and Singapore. Japan also had the highest share of people not using generative AI at all, at more than 30%.

So what is going on? My read after years of working with Japanese clients: Japan runs a dual-track search culture. One group lets AI decide. Another group reads the AI answer, distrusts it, and verifies it against a source they already know. I half expect Google to add a digital hanko stamp to AI Overviews for the Japanese market, just so the answer looks approved by the right department.

For SMEs, both tracks lead to the same conclusion. You need to be inside the AI answer for the first group, and you need a credible, citable website for the second group to verify. One without the other leaves money on the table.

What Changed for SMEs in Japan in 2026?

The biggest change for Japanese SMEs is that customers now make comparison decisions inside AI answers, while most SMEs are only using AI internally.

Teikoku Databank’s March 2026 survey of 10,312 companies found that 34.5% of Japanese companies actively use generative AI at work. The gap by size is clear: 46.5% of large companies, 32.4% of SMEs, and only 28.0% of small businesses. Of the companies using it, 86.7% say it works. Meanwhile, PwC Japan’s spring 2026 survey put the share of Japanese companies using or promoting generative AI at 87%, up 11 points year on year.

Notice what those numbers measure. They track AI for writing and summarizing documents. They say almost nothing about whether customers can find your business through AI. That blind spot is where most SMEs are losing ground.

I see it in my own business. For my Tokyo photography service, I track ten prompts that international visitors type into ChatGPT and AI Mode when they plan a photo session. At my last check, my business appeared in one of them. One. And I do this for a living. If a marketer who obsesses over AI visibility is sitting at 10%, I promise the ramen shop, tax accountant and machine-parts supplier down the street are sitting at zero.

Why are clicks falling while buying intent rises?

Clicks are falling because AI answers resolve simple questions, but the clicks that remain are more valuable. CyberAgent’s August 2026 data shows 61.0% of users have clicked a URL in an AI answer to research further, and 58.7% have bought a product or service after an AI recommendation. The share of users who have moved half or more of their searching to AI rose from 30.1% to 46.6% in fifteen months.

Where does AI search matter most in the buying journey?

AI search matters most at the comparison stage. According to the same CyberAgent survey, users now start with generative AI when comparing product prices (15.5%), accommodation (14.8%) and property conditions (14.5%). In every category, AI use at the comparison stage beat AI use at the information stage. If your business competes on “which one should I choose,” AI already sits between you and the customer.

Can SMEs finally measure AI visibility?

Yes, partially. On June 3, 2026, Google announced Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console, showing impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. The rollout started with a subset of sites and, per Keywords Everywhere’s tracker, reached every property worldwide on August 31, 2026. The catch: the report shows impressions only, with no clicks or query data. It tells you that you appeared, not why.

How Should Japanese SMEs Optimize for AI Search Now?

Start with the fundamentals, then build for the comparison stage, then claim your LINE surface. Here is the order I recommend:

  1. Open the Search Console generative AI report this week. List every page that earned AI impressions. Those pages are your proof of concept. Pages with zero AI impressions but good rankings are your quickest wins.
  2. Write ten real customer prompts in Japanese and English. Test them in AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Agent i once a month. Record who gets cited. This is your citation share, and it is the metric your competitors are not tracking.
  3. Build comparison pages you would be proud to have quoted. “Company A vs. Company B,” “Which plan fits a 20-person office,” “Price ranges in Tokyo for X.” AI answers are built at the comparison stage, so give them a trustworthy source.
  4. Put named, dated data on every key page. Prices, service areas, response times, years in business, certifications. AI systems cite specific claims, not vague ones.
  5. Make your business facts identical everywhere. Your company name, address and service description should match across your website, Google Business Profile, LINE Official Account and directory listings, in both Japanese and English.
  6. Treat your LINE Official Account as an AI asset. With LINE OA AI Mode and Agent i Biz arriving, the information in your account will shape how LINE’s AI answers questions about you. Clean it up now.
  7. Check your server logs for AI crawlers. Look for GPTBot, Google-Extended and PerplexityBot. Pages that bots never visit will never be cited. Refresh or restructure those first.
  8. Refresh your top five pages every quarter. AI features favor current, well-maintained content, and a dated update is a clear freshness signal.

A reality check from Google itself: its guidance on AI features makes clear that AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same foundations as regular Search. You do not need special AI markup or an llms.txt file. You need content worth citing and a site Google can crawl.

What Mistakes Are Japanese SMEs Making With AI Search?

The most common mistake is assuming AI search is a Tokyo tech-company problem. It is not. Here are the others I see most often:

  • Measuring only rankings. A page can rank third and never appear in an AI answer. Rankings without citation share hide the real picture.
  • Publishing only in Japanese or only in English. Japan’s AI search market is bilingual in practice. Inbound tourists, foreign residents and overseas buyers ask in English about Japanese businesses, and Japanese customers ask in Japanese. Cover both.
  • Using AI to write thin, copied content. Teikoku Databank found that 45.1% of AI-using companies apply it to writing. If your AI-written blog says the same thing as everyone else’s, AI systems have no reason to cite you.
  • Ignoring LINE and Yahoo! JAPAN. Western GEO advice focuses on ChatGPT and Google. In Japan, skipping Agent i means skipping a surface with enormous daily reach.
  • Waiting for perfect data. Search Console shows impressions but not clicks. That is not an excuse to wait. Start tracking prompts manually today.

Question: Is Google AI Mode available in Japanese?
Answer: Yes. Google launched AI Mode in Japanese in September 2025 and expanded it through 2026 with Search Live, Personal Intelligence for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and travel features such as Google Flights integration. It is available from the AI Mode tab in Google Search.

Question: What is LINE Yahoo’s Agent i?
Answer: Agent i is an AI agent launched by LINE Yahoo on April 20, 2026, combining the Yahoo! JAPAN AI Assistant and LINE AI. It answers questions and helps with shopping and travel inside LINE and Yahoo! JAPAN, and LINE Yahoo plans business versions for official accounts during FY2026.

Question: How can a small business in Japan appear in AI search results?
Answer: Start with strong SEO fundamentals, since Google’s AI features rely on the same ranking systems as regular Search. Then publish comparison-focused pages with specific, dated facts, keep business information consistent across your website, Google Business Profile and LINE Official Account, and track your citations in AI answers every month.

Question: Can I measure my website’s visibility in Google AI Overviews?
Answer: Yes. Google Search Console launched Search Generative AI performance reports on June 3, 2026, showing impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. The report does not yet include clicks or queries, so pair it with manual prompt tracking.

The Bottom Line on AI Search in Japan

2026 was the year AI search in Japan stopped being a forecast and became a majority behavior. Google moved AI into the search box, LINE Yahoo moved it into the messaging app, and Google finally gave site owners a way to measure it. Japanese users still verify more than anyone else, which is good news for businesses with credible, specific websites. The SMEs that win the next twelve months will not be the ones using AI to write faster. They will be the ones AI chooses to recommend.

The question for your business is simple: when a customer asks an AI agent who to hire, where to buy or which option is best, does your name come up?
